The holiday season and New Year celebrations are often synonymous with indulgence, excess, and a surge in consumerism. However, 2024 is coming to a close and we are stepping into 2025, a new wave of sustainability-driven practices is reforming how we approach these festive events and time. At the forefront of this shift is TikTok, a platform that’s become a powerhouse for viral trends and cultural change. From mindful gift-giving to eco-conscious celebrations, TikTok users are championing an eco-revolution that’s inspiring millions to usher in the New Year more sustainably.

1. The Shift Towards Sustainable Practices

Tiktok is all about trends. One of the most prominent TikTok trends this season is the focus on adopting sustainable habits that go beyond the holidays and into the New Year. Creators are advocating for practices that combine sustainability with meaningful actions, such as:

  • Investing in Learning Experiences: Material gifts are a thing of the past. Most people never know what they want for the holidays. Instead of material gifts, trending ideas include enrolling in online courses, funding skill-development workshops, conferences, events or offering memberships to eco-conscious communities.
  • Ethical Donations: Many TikTokers encourage gifting through donations to NGOs, charities or environmental or social justice causes in the recipient’s name. A lot has happened in 2024 and if you are able to, donate!
  • Quality Over Quantity: We all know that shopping can be exiting and fun. However, lets try to remember something, quality matters! A recurring theme is prioritising fewer, higher-quality items that are durable and ethically produced. It is simply better to invest in something long term rather than spending more money over a shorter period of time.

These ideas encourage individuals to think beyond temporary gratification and focus on long-term impacts.

2. Rethinking Celebration Waste

The holiday season typically results in a lot of significant waste, from packaging to party supplies. Social media, especially TikTok, is helping spread the message of conscious consumerism.

What is conscious consumerism? Take a look at some examples below as TikTok’s sustainability advocates are showcasing creative ways to minimize waste:

  • Reusable Party Decor: Swapping disposable tableware for reusable options and using LED lights for energy efficiency. This is not only financially and sustainably a viable option but it also gives communities a sense of tradition and nostalgia. Something that everyone needs during festive periods.
  • Digital Invitations: Reducing paper waste by using apps or social media to invite guests or simply give people a call! Now is the time to reconnect.
  • Composting Food Waste: Demonstrating how leftover food can be composted rather than discarded. TikTokers have shown us so many DIYs and tips and tricks from using leftover foods for new recipes or even to make candles.
  • Excessive Spending & Waste: The holidays often come with excessive shopping, wrapping paper waste, and discarded packaging. In response, TikTok creators are encouraging people to avoid overbuying and choose gifts that have long-term value.

These tips are resonating with a growing audience committed to reducing their environmental impact during celebrations.

3. Sustainable New Year Resolutions

TikTok’s shift to eco-conscious creators are also influencing how people set their New Year resolutions. Instead of vague or overly ambitious goals, that we typically all make, users are sharing resolutions centred on sustainable living, such as:

  • Adopting Plant-Based Diets: Simple swaps to reduce meat consumption for environmental benefits. Not only is this good for the environment, reducing CO2 emissions but also it is ethically a positive decision. Small simple changes can make a big impact.
  • Reducing Fast Fashion Purchases: Embracing second-hand shopping or supporting ethical brands. More TikTok users are embracing second-hand shopping as an alternative to buying new items. Vintage gifts, second-hand clothing, and upcycled products are becoming sought-after holiday gifts.
  • Eco-Friendly Commuting: Opting for public transportation, biking, or walking instead of driving. Prioritising your health is an added benefit.

These trends not only inspire individuals but also create a collective momentum toward a more sustainable future

4. The Role of Ethical Consumption

Another key trend is the focus on ethical consumption. TikTok creators are spotlighting brands and products that align with fair trade, sustainability, and ethical labour practices. Some popular themes include:

  • Highlighting brands that offer transparency about their supply chains.
  • Showcasing eco-friendly alternatives to popular consumer goods.
  • Encouraging viewers to research before making purchases.

This movement is helping consumers make informed choices that align with their values.

5. The Influence of Viral Challenges

TikTok challenges continue to be a major driver of trends, and many of these are centred on sustainability. Challenges like #GreenNewYear and #EcoResolutions2025 encourage users to:

  • Share one sustainable action they plan to adopt in the New Year.
  • Post creative ways to upcycle or reuse items they already own.
  • Document their journey toward reducing carbon footprints.

These challenges create a ripple effect, motivating others to join the movement and sparking widespread discussion about sustainability.

Why TikTok’s Eco-Revolution Matters

TikTok’s emphasis on eco-friendly traditions and practices is more than just a trend; it’s part of a larger cultural shift toward environmental responsibility. It is a story that we have all hear before, but the climate crisis is becoming increasingly urgent. Environmental activist Greta Thunberg summarises it extremely well. Adults keep saying: ‘We owe it to the young people to give them hope.’ But I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house is on fire. Because it is.”

These words are powerful and true. Don’t doubt that these movements that empower individuals to take meaningful actions that collectively drive change. By promoting sustainable habits, TikTok is not only reshaping how we celebrate but also fostering a mindset of mindfulness and responsibility.

  • TikTok’s role in promoting sustainable celebrations is transforming the way we approach the holidays and the New Year. From ethical gifting to eco-conscious resolutions, these trends are inspiring a generation to celebrate responsibly. As we embrace these practices, we not only honour the joy of the season but also contribute to a more sustainable and thoughtful future.
  • Reflect on the Movement: TikTok’s anti-overconsumption movement is making waves, shifting how we approach the holidays. Instead of focusing on material gifts and waste, this year’s trend is about embracing sustainability, thoughtful gifting, and reducing our environmental impact.
  • Call to Action: Encourage readers to adopt these sustainable practices this holiday season. Whether through choosing experiences over things, supporting ethical brands, or wrapping gifts creatively, they can make a meaningful impact on the environment.

Even the smallest change can make a significant impact. Be the change you wish to see in the world.
